Numbered Academic Outline Word Template
The Numbered Academic Outline combines a decimal outline structure (1. → 1.1 → 1.1.1) with APA-style typography: uniform 12 pt Times New Roman, bold headings through level 7, regular for levels 8–9.
One important caveat: APA 7 heading styles do not use numbering — APA's five heading levels are defined by formatting only. This template is for institutions that accept numbered outline structures alongside APA-formatted papers. If your course requires strict APA 7 headings, keep the typography and turn the numbering off.

Numbering Structure
All nine levels are linked to Word's built-in Heading styles: apply Heading 1 and level 1 numbering appears, Heading 2 and level 2 appears, and so on. Numbering is followed by a single space — no stray tab jumps.

|---|---|---|
| 1 | Heading 1 | 1. |
| 2 | Heading 2 | 1.1. |
| 3 | Heading 3 | 1.1.1. |

APA 7 does not require numbered headings. Its five heading levels are defined by formatting (bold, italic, title case), not by numbers. This template gives you APA-style typography plus decimal numbering — use it when your institution asks for a numbered outline alongside APA-formatted text. If your course requires strict APA 7 headings, keep the formatting and remove the numbering via Home → Multilevel List → None.
Who This Template Is For
- University papers that require numbered sections
- Social science theses and journal submissions
- Papers formatted in APA or MLA style where your institution also wants numbered headings
In practice: write in uniform 12 pt Times New Roman, use Heading 1–5 for the numbered hierarchy, and switch to APA's formatting-only headings (bold/italic, no numbers) if your instructor requires strict APA 7 compliance.
How It Works in Word
Double-click the .dotx and Word opens a new, unnamed document based on the template. Type a heading, apply a Heading style from the Styles gallery, and the number appears. Add, delete, move, or promote headings — the numbering re-calculates itself, because it is defined inside the style, not typed into the text.
Save your finished document as .docx and the numbering stays with it. Works on Word for Microsoft 365, Word 2024/2021/2019/2016, Word for Mac, and WPS Office.
