Academic Decimal Word Numbering Template

Academic Decimal is the default numbering system for reports, essays, and technical documentation: 1. at the top level, 1.1 below it, 1.1.1 below that, all the way to nine levels. It is the most widely used multilevel format in academic and technical writing.

This template links all nine levels to Word's built-in Heading 1–9 styles in Times New Roman, so numbering appears the moment you apply a style and renumbers itself when you add, remove, or move sections.

Numbering Structure

All nine levels are linked to Word's built-in Heading styles: apply Heading 1 and level 1 numbering appears, Heading 2 and level 2 appears, and so on. Numbering is followed by a single space — no stray tab jumps.

Who This Template Is For

In practice: apply Heading 1 to "Introduction" and it reads "1. Introduction"; apply Heading 2 to "Background" right below it and it reads "1.1. Background". Insert a new Heading 2 between two sections and everything below renumbers automatically.

How It Works in Word

Double-click the .dotx and Word opens a new, unnamed document based on the template. Type a heading, apply a Heading style from the Styles gallery, and the number appears. Add, delete, move, or promote headings — the numbering re-calculates itself, because it is defined inside the style, not typed into the text.

Save your finished document as .docx and the numbering stays with it. Works on Word for Microsoft 365, Word 2024/2021/2019/2016, Word for Mac, and WPS Office.
